I am a Consultant Eye Surgeon working in the Nuffield Hospital,  Newcastle upon Tyne, England.

My NHS post is at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle, where I now work part-time.

I have 22 years’ experience as a Consultant Ophthalmologist, currently performing over 1000 adult cataract operations per year.

I offer a bespoke cataract surgery service so that each person has vision that matches his or her needs and expectations.

I have created this website to provide information about the service I offer and about cataract surgery in general.

If you wish to see me, we would have a half hour Consultation at our first meeting. I will carefully assess your eye, and discuss the best type of lens replacement to meet your needs, take all measurements and book you in for surgery . Normally, within 3 weeks, you will have your first eye surgery and usually both eyes will have had surgery within 5 weeks of our meeting.

  1. My wife developed cateracts in both eyes approx 3 years ago, and has had to wear sunglasses to stop the light dazzling her even in shops/supermarkets were the worst with flourecent lights.

    The optician referred her back to our doctor, but commented on that even with cateracts, her eye sight was probably of a level that the NHS would not possibly do anything with, and probably the quickest way to get the required treatment would be to go private.

    We reviewed the Nuffield cateract surgery and came across Mr Shafiqs’ web site and seeing how many operations he carries out through the year not only on adults but children as well we decided to go with him, and what a good decision that was.

    At the initial consultation Mr Shafiq tested my wife’s eyes and explained what was wrong with her eyes and the treatment and procedure he would perform to correct her eye sight.

    My wife was very anxious about the operation but Mr Shafiq calmed her worries with his reassuring manner.

    She had her right eye done first and 3 weeks later her left eye all with a local anaesthetic.

    Now after just 6 days her vision in both eyes is wonderful, and improving day by day.

    We will certainly recommend Mr Shafiq to anyone contemplating cateract surgery.

  2. Mr Shafiq and his team exuded professionalism, reassurance and humour in abundance whilst I had no pain, no bruising, no trauma, just a weird 15 mins in an operating theatre. Now best of all at 71, I need no glasses. What a result. What a precious gift.

  3. I HAVE RECENTLY UNDERGONE CATARACT SURGERY AND I MUST SAY THAT THE PROCEDURE, WHICH WAS CARRIED OUT BY MR SHAFIQ AND HIS TEAM WAS VERY IMPRESSIVE,AND THE RESULTS REMARKABLE……WOW
    I FELT TOTALLY AT EASE AS THE PROCEDURE WAS BEING CARRIED OUT AND APPRECIATED ALL THEIR EFFORTS ON MY BEHALF.
