Mr Shafiq is a Consultant Ophthalmologist specialising in cataract surgery. He has been a Consultant since 2001, mainly based in Newcastle, England. In that time he has performed thousands of cataract operations, with a reputation for high quality and affability.
He was an NHS consultant until early in 2023, operating on newborn babies with cataract, children and adults with cataract, when the opportunity arose to increase his work as a Synaptik agency cataract surgeon on the Isle of Man, reducing the waiting list for cataract surgery.
His wife is from the Island , and they decided to put roots down with a plan to retire there. He was appointed as a part-time Consultant at Nobles from September 2023, and is the only hospital Consultant who currently performs cataract surgery at Nobles.

Mr Shafiq maintains his work in Newcastle, working at Newmedica Newcastle, an independent provider of NHS cataract surgery, for 6 weeks in every 2 months. He has extremely high throughput of cataract surgery of at least 25 operations per week, totalling 1500 cataract per year in England.
Therefore, Manx residents have the opportunity to see a high quality , high volume surgeon with an established reputation, who can provide a high quality service here on the Isle of Man. He is maintaining his skills to the highest degree by performing very large numbers of operations in the UK.
